Susan Wynter Toys

Susan Wynter (1923 – 2013) trained as a flight mechanic during the war servicing spitfires and other planes. After the war ended she moved to St Ives and opened up a small toyshop called ‘The Toy Trumpet’ setting up a workshop within the premises of an undertaker where she was able to use the off-cuts from the coffins. Susan realised that after raising two children, that the toys she had been producing ‘had no place in a nursery’ and so she completely redesigned her toys with an emphasis on function and education. This proved highly successful with Susan Wynter toys being sold to large companies such as Galt Toys, Educational Supply Association (ESA), Abbatt Toys and others. The puzzles shown here are identified by the remnants of a ‘Susan Wynter’ sticker on the first puzzle and by the very absence of a sticker on the second, such transient identifying markers make these puzzles exceptionally hard to find, requiring hours of trawling through thousands of vintage puzzles.
